Oxycontin Express: Let's Start at the Beginning

Today is Day Fifteen of the A-Z Challenge and the day for the letter O. I am reviving an old post that didn't get a lot of attention when I first posted it. It is a reality post about the start of this whole mess big pharma, unscrupulous doctors, and painkillers. WV Oxycontin Express: Let's Start At the Beginning. So folks, hop aboard the OxyContin Express choo- choo!

Yesterday I posted something I wrote a few years ago called, The Inconvenient Truth: The Devil At The Door... Heroin. I also wrote a post about WV and the Oxycontin Express.

Today is a good day to take a look back at the beginning of the heroin epidemic. A piece of often forgotten history, a piece when written didn't get a lot of response. I am reviving it this month. Grab a comfy seat, kick off your shoes and hop aboard... The OxyContin Express...

Today's Teaser: 'GENERATION RX': Wake Up to the Nightmare

Trust me you won't want to miss this eye-opening controversial documentary

For decades, scores of doctors, government officials, journalists, and others have extolled the benefits of psychiatric medicines for children. GENERATION RX presents "the rest of the story" and unveils how this era of unprecedented change in Western culture really occurred - and what price has been paid by our society.

International award-winning filmmaker Kevin P. Miller (Let Truth Be The Bias, The Promised Land) "delivers a jaw-dropping emotional ride," and "weaves a terrifying tale of criminal conspiracy, the mass abandonment of medical ethics, and the routine betrayal of an entire generation."

By employing the expertise of internationally respected professionals from the fields of medicine, ethics, journalism, and academia, GENERATION RX investigates collusion between drug companies and their regulatory watchdogs at the FDA and focuses on the powerful stories of real families who followed the advice of their doctors - and faced devastating consequences for doing so.

GENERATION RX is a film about families who confronted horror and found nowhere to turn for help - and how scores of children have been caught in the vortex of mind-bending drugs at the earliest stages of their growth and development. This powerful documentary also questions whether we have forced millions of children onto pharmaceutical drugs for commercial rather than scientific reasons.

Ultimately, Generation RX may help parents decide whether the perceived benefits of these medications outweigh the serious risks to children.

Drug Facts Week: How Did This Start?

One question that seems to always get asked and I know I've asked the same question. That question is, How Did This Start in the First Place?

One fact is that no one affected ever woke up one morning and thought to themselves, 'I think I'll become addicted to opiates today.'

But, as with everything it starts somewhere doesn't it?

The quick answer to that question is this problem started many

(Documentary) The Drugging Of Our Children

In the absence of any objective medical tests to determine who has ADD or ADHD, doctors rely in part on standardized assessments and the impressions of teachers and guardians while they administration leaves little room for other causes or aggravating factors, such as diet, or environment. Starting in the 1980's teachers, principles and school systems began diagnosing without degrees in any medical field.

Hence, diagnosing a child or adolescent with ADD or ADHD is often the outcome, although no organic basis for either disease has yet to be clinically proven.

Psychiatrists may then prescribe psychotropic drugs for the children without first without making it clear to parents that these medications can have severe side-effects including insomnia, loss of appetite, headaches, psychotic symptoms and even potentially fatal adverse reactions, such as cardiac arrhythmia.

If we are going to look at the entire picture, the realm of addiction goes outside of OxyContin, Hydrocodone and all the other pain killers that were over prescribed. There is an over prescribing of these drugs as well.

And yet, despite these dangers, many school systems actually work with government agencies to force parents to drug their children, threatening those who refuse with the prospect of having their children taken from the home unless they cooperate.

(Book) Generation Rx

Greg Critser's brilliantly incisive Generation Rx moves the conversation about prescription drugs to where it hits home: our own bodies. How, he asks, has "big pharma" created a nation of
pharmaceutical tribes, each with its own unique beliefs, taboos, and brand loyalties? How have powerful chemical compounds for chronic diseases, once controlled by physicians, become substances we feel entitled to, whether we need them or not? How did we come to hate drug companies but love their pills?

Read on in Generation Rx for:

-- exclusive interviews with the strategists, scientists, and current and former heads of GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, Merck, Roche, and more

-- a first-ever, inside look at the rollicking business story behind pharma's rise to power

-- the dramatic effects our drug culture is having on our major organs, from the liver to the heart to the brain

-- why old bodies and young bodies are the biggest, and riskiest, arenas for our great American prescription pill party

-- how the largely uncharted terrain of polypharmacy (various drugs taken together) has unleashed unanticipated, often deadly, consequences on unwitting patients

Generation Rx will make every American who has ever taken a prescription drug look anew at what’s in our medicine cabinets, and why.

Up For Discussion: What Do You Think About OxyContin For Chidlren?

I am trying to find a good day in which to post my "controversial" up for discussion posts. I love that someone added the word controversy to these debates and discussion posts. However, let me remind those people that nothing about this heroin epidemic is controversy. So, I really don't understand the word being associated with my posts, but whatever!

On Aug. 13, 2015 it was announced that the FDA approved the use of OxyContin in children ages 11 to 16 with severe pain, the agency says on its web site.

The FDA says,

$$$$ For Doctors in West Virginia

There are many who will argue this debate. I know I live in a family of them. You may or may not wish to believe that large pharmacutical companies paid doctors and others for pushing OxyContin and other pain killers. Three thousand eight hundred and fifty three doctors in West Virginia were paid to play.

It's a well known fact today that doctors who receive something in return are more likely to prescribe more of a certain drug This is something that has been going on for many years.

Dollars For Doctors is a searchable database the doctors and facilities here in West Virginia who received money, trips and other amenities from large pharmaceutical companies. You can search to see if your doctor is on the list...

The SG Calls For More Funds

I don't know about you guys but I would love to know about the numbers. For instance the Federal and State money of $3.74 Billion already going on substance abuse, addiction, treatment, and prevention.

Especially since only 1.9% of that money is even used for which they say- substance abuse, addiction, treatment, and prevention.

It's a well-known fact when you follow the money, you will get the answer you seek. I would love to chase the paper and the money trail of all of this money already and now more money being proposed.

West Virginia is the only state to report a higher opioid-overdose death rate than New Mexico, could receive as much as $10 million under the new budget proposal. Click to read more...

We Need A Full Investigation Into the FDA Pay-To-Play Scandal

I found this article by Health Impact News. Earlier this month, the Washington Post exposed the FDA for taking part in a blatant “pay-to-play” scheme: companies paid as much as $25,000 to attend meetings with FDA officials to shape policy on how drug manufacturers can prove the “safety and effectiveness” of painkillers.

Sen. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia—one of the states hardest hit by the painkiller epidemic—is now calling for a full investigation of the FDA’s role in these meetings.

Ask your senators to add their voice to Sen. Manchin’s in calling for a full Senate probe! After reading you will find the information at the bottom.

The article from Impact Health News says,

I was disappointed to learn of the FDA's role in what appears to be a blatant "pay-to-play" scheme: earlier this month, a Washington Post investigation revealed that drug companies paid as much as $25,000 to attend meetings with FDA officials to shape the agency's policy on painkillers.
