When I Lay My Isaac Down

On most Sunday's I try to post something inspirational and positive in which to start my week.

So many times in so many situations and especially loving someone with the disease of addiction I've had so many people tell me, "GOD DOESN'T GIVE US MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE" And so many times I've wondered about that very statement and those words. I mean come on! Really!

What the heck does it mean He doesn't give us more than we can handle?

Come on! I am dealing with a child addicted to heroin here on earth. Wondering often, has God turned his back on me? Does He not hear my middle of the night prayers and cries? And so many more times I wondered if He was really hearing my prayers. Maybe my prayers were too selfish?

Often it ends in just screaming, Okay God. Just how much do you think I can handle?

There are so many mountains in our lives we will cross. None of those mountains will compare to watching someone you love destroy their life with heroin while you stand back idly, watching and there is nothing you can do.

It wasn't until I started walking the STEPS, staying true to those STEPS in my daily life that I realized just what is meant by God not giving us more than we can handle! And let me tell you when I discovered it, it was powerful.

Step Two: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity and then onto
Step Three: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God/Our Higher Power as we understood Him it was then that the fog started lifting and I have a better understanding.

When we are faced with this crisis in our lives, and we are crossing those mountains in prayer have you ever considered that He (God) only wants us first? Could it be His way of saying, I've got this? Maybe all I need is faith and to believe.

Once we give ourselves and turn our lives over to Him, he will make everything possible. Nothing is more true than the words to this song and the Bible Story about Isaac. We all on this side have an Isaac and in all things relating to this disease of addiction to heroin there comes the time that you will realize that it is you and your Isaac OR it is you and God.

When I Lay My Isaac Down

Abraham prayed for the day
God would give him a son
Blessed Isaac was his name
The greatest gift he’d ever known
Then came the day, who would have dreamed
God would say “Give him to me
On this mountain you will prove,
It’s you and Isaac, or it’s me and you”
When I lay my Isaac down
Broken heart but my Fathers proud
On this altar here he lays
Just to find it wasn’t him he/(God) wanted me
Most of us I’d dare to say
Have an Isaac in God’s way
On the Altar God will prove
It’s not your Isaac that he wants
He wants you
Chorus
On this altar here he lays
Just to find it wasn’t him he/(God) wanted me

Remember that God has a reason for allowing things to happen to us. We may never understand why or His wisdom. We simply have to trust His will.

  1. This is a beautiful and so very true statement for all of us to consider...That God Only Wants US.....and He DOES make anything possible once we cooperate and surrender any "control" that we may have....which is never as much as we believe it is....Thank you for this, I needed the reminder.
