Local Candidate For Sheriff Arrested For Heroin

As the news broke yesterday about Mr. John Orem who is running for Berkeley County Sheriff in November and was arrested for heroin possession my Facebook exploded. As I read comment after comment I also felt somewhat sad for his family because they too are on our side of the addiction.

As Matt Umstead, from the Herald Mail reported yesterday,

"Orem was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of his Harold Drive home Tuesday morning, according to a complaint filed by West Virginia State Police Cpl. M.D. Gillmore.
An EMS official told the trooper that Orem had been administered Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of narcotics, on Tuesday morning and about 11 p.m., Monday night, during separate responses by medics.
Gillmore said a cotton ball found in a metal spoon, which was located in a bathroom cabinet, later field-tested positive for heroin, records said."

While many were making it a political statement making it Republican and GOP I tried reminding as many as possible- HEROIN DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.

How many times do we say that very statement?

How many of us on this side have had our loved one overdose and then arrested for their addiction to heroin? How many of us continue to scream, Heroin addiction (or any addiction) is not a crime?

All of us.

Remember that we do not appreciate the stigma. We should try to make this more about awareness than a political statement.

While I understand that he is a political figure as well as a bail bondsman it appears that he has a problem with heroin.

Let us hope that he seeks help for this addiction.

Much of the shaming came from those who have told me they hate the stigma of this addiction. I know it is hard to refrain from making harsh statements. Our son has been referred to as trash because of his heroin addiction by those wearing uniform and by those who have bailed him out of jail so I know it is hard. We have to remember what we preach about the stigma and that ALL LIVES MATTER when someone is addicted and struggling with heroin addiction.
